Since I've opened up the Halloween Blog on September 28th the last couple of years, let do it again this year. I actually spent some time today pulling stuff out of the basement crawl space, but it takes a while to get everything setup so it will be at least a week before the webcams go live. Until then, feel free to chime in ... plus here's a few pictures of the Halloween Display from last year.

Anything new this year Alek? Also is anyone else having issues with the background midi music and QuickTime 7.7.4 not liking embedded midi files? (Had to downgrade to 7.7.3)
Alek replies at 11:37 - Nothing too major is new this year, but I'll put together a post in a few days outlining that. Yea, I too see some sort of issue with the browser plugin handling a MIDI file ... thought it was just me ... so I'll have to look into it.

i hoping you able to stream hd video this year even if only from 6pm to 12am and then go back to non stream cams or something like that be so cool i know there is bandwidth issues doing streaming but*** so much better.

I've asked several of the camera makers if I could get a loaner, but no luck so far - would be nice to have HD quality. Probably do some of the setup next weekend.

The music auto-play should work better now ... turns out Apple did break something with QuickTime 7.7.4 (good writeup here) when using the EMBED tag for MIDI ... so I changed it to an OBJECT tag and it now works for me on Firefox and IE ... but not on Chrome - shucks! ;-)

I've noticed if you click on the text that says Spooky Halloween Music, you can play the midi file manually... for those that really miss it. No offense Alek, but after the first visit or two to the webcam I usually mute that anyway. :?

Alek I am guessing your working on the site and it's the cause___ but for me on chrome and IE everything seems to be aligned in really weird way and the circuit layout section is all out of alignment as well. Any ideas why?

Do you have any idea what Linux codecs are required for the embedded music on your website to play? I'm using Ubuntu 13 with Firefox and Chrome, but I don't get sound. Ubuntu sometimes searches for missing codecs for the totem player, but can't find them.

I hope to start putting some stuff up next week - typically the first thing is the icicle lights along the roof line. But before putting 'em up, I test 'em ... and since these do double-duty at Halloween & Christmas, there's always a bunch that are burned out. Below is how many I had to replace in 10 strands of 150 each lights ... plus the LightKeeper Pro - aka the "Magic Gun" which does an amazing job re-lighting dead strands.

Rest assured I'm working behind the scenes to get stuff ready. One "big green" project is there's always a few leaks in the Hulk's that need to get fixed - below is the Hulk Brothers looking strong ... although it was a bit breezy as you can guess by the position of the right one's pants ;-) The webcams are tested/operational ... so I will probably turn on webcam1 Wednesday morning while I put some stuff up on the house - tune in!

Alek___ Any chance of activating the X10 controls tonight, even though a lot of thus stuff is likley not set up yet? Also like the idea of post 43 and having the cams live 24/7.
Alek replies at 19:34 - Sorry things won't be ready for a couple of days - still working on getting stuff configured/tested behind the scenes. For instance, here's a picture of the X10 modules along with some transceivers, USB transmitters, wireless remote, and the totally awesome XTB-IIR Signal Booster from JV Digital Engineering. Note there are also a bunch of SR227 X10 Super Sockets not pictured.

Alek replies at 08:14 - I live in Colorado, so we are on Mountain Time which is 2 hours earlier than the East Coast. There is also a "X10 CONTROLS ON" count-down timer in the webcam window.

Had a decent opening night ... still a bunch of stuff to put out ... and a few minor adjustments ... but nice to see that after dusting off the technology, it all worked well. One "bummer" is I didn't get a loaner webcam, so the haunted office is an older one with so-so image quality.

A couple of people have said they have problems viewing the videos. Turns out that Windows7 Media Player has an incompatability with FFMPEG (VLC, Quicktime, etc all work fine) ... so I uploaded everything to Youtube and added embeds below ... plus re-pointed the links on the halloween movies page.

Here's a picture of the "treats" for tomorrow ... something for the little ones and also the big ones! The three 150-count bags of candy ... I give out at least two to each kid ... so I'm guessing I'll have to break into the 3rd pack. I had the EggNog last year - it's awesome. While the "Chocolate Shop Wine" and "Adult Chocolate Milk" look/sounds cool, I can't say they are my favorite.

OK, so far in these 50MPH winds, the Giant Lawn Pumpkin and Skull broke loose and went down the street - yes, I do really stake things down. The Great Pumpkin Patch on the roof started to slide off - it is bolted to a wood base with concrete pavers. So three down ... and Homer swaying in the wind looks like he drank too much Eggnog! Give me rain, sleet or snow ... but not wind - that is the greatest enemy of holiday decorations ...

Alek replies at 10:30 - The bulbs are replaceable and it appears to be in decent shape ... so I would say that come 2014, there is a very good chance that the Great Pumpkin Patch will Rise Again! ;-)

Below that is the takedown video of the Haunted Office ... be sure to watch past the halfway point! I hope to upload webcam1 and webcam2 (where you'll see the trick-or-treaters) in a little bit.

The other two time-lapse videos are are now uploaded - webcam1 shows the front of the house. The winds were gusting up to 50MPH after 8:00 ... Homer & Frank look like they drank too much Eggnog! You'll also see me go out several times on the ladder and on the roof to make emergency fixes. Webcam2 shows the front yard and you'll see trick-or-treaters walk up the driveway ... plus as the winds pick up, the Giant Pumpkin and Skull actually pull out of their stakes! All of the videos are collected here.
