For the technies out there, this is done by taking the text input from the web page, doing some validation (and hopefully (!) obscuring any profanity), limiting the length to 60 characters or so, and dumping the contents to an HTML file. The laptop visible in Webcam3 (Haunted Office Cam) then just keeps reloading the page every couple of second using the Firefox Extension ReloadEvery. So web users see the most recent text that was entered. I also keep a log for each day and the number of IM's sent.
And yes, people who abuse the system are banned ... just keep it family-friendly and have fun please!
