If it was all a hoax in the past, how do we know it won't be a hoax this year?? This WOULD be neat!
Alek replies at 2005_11_07_22:29: Great question and skepticism is good. The hoax this year is that everyone will think it is simulated again (as it was in 2002-2004) but I'm actually doing it for real in 2005. I don't know how to "prove it's real" online, but many folks were convinced by the halloween decorations webcam along with the time-lapse halloween videos - those sure would have required a heck of a lot of work to fake. Check back after Thanksgiving and form your own opinion - I bet you end up thinking it is pretty darn neat ... ;-)

What if you show the latest news paper for the day?
Alek replies at 2005_11_09_17:38: I actually did that with the stamped concrete cam where I would walk up to the webcam with that day's issue of the Wall Street Journal.

I am check everyday now to see when the Christmas lights go up at your house. We have started putting up a few. A couple of airblown characters. A big turkey, and a santa that waves hi, and then slides down the chimney. Slowing we will get the decks up on the days I am feeling good and it is warm..and my husband cooperates. :) computerwheelie (trach and vent user)

Your Christmas lights are awesome! This is going to be my first year looking at them this season. I am just like you. I love Christmas lights. I'm actually putting my family's lights up tomorrow. But my dad said we probably can't turn them on until next week or after Thanksgiving. Oh well. Can't wait to see your lights this year!

Your animated GIF Santa cursor is taking 2 steps every second. Assuming a 3 foot stride, he's walking at 4 MPH. So if you have a thousand web surfers look at your site for an hour, he walks 4,000 miles - does he ever get tired and slow down?

Carson Williams from Mason Ohio used 88 Light-O-Rama channels to control his 16,000 christmas lights - check out this awesome 3 minute video that is set to music - WOW! X10 technology (which I have used for years) is cheap and simple, but doesn't have the speed and reliability neccessary for this. It would be a blast to upgrade to this type of powerline control, but it is beyond my time/budget for now.

In regard to the Christmas lights done in sync to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra....I wanted to state for the record that I have personally viewed the light show many, many times (on the street in front of the house). It is 100___ real. The part that you are viewing is just the finale. The entire show is about 12 minutes long and outstanding. It features Frosty and the Red Baron along with numerous other emsembles. A great show to watch, can't wait to see what he does this year.

In case you missed me up on the roof, you can see a time-lapse christmas video of it - sorry no dramatic ending as I got down in one piece. The Santa on the roof is also a controllable inflateable (zone 5) although even with some extra wood/pavers weighing him down, I'm a bit concerned if the wind picks up.

So over dinner last night, I was explaining to my 7 and 4-year old sons that I was trying to raise money for Celiac Disease Research so they will eventually not have to be very careful what they eat. They both volunteered to chip in a dollar. That's a healthy contribution given that their last "income" was $3 each from the Hulk'in lemonade stand this summer. Needless to say, I was impressed.

Winds are gusting 20+ MPH, so I have disabled the inflateable Frosty and Frankie. However, the inflateable Santa on the roof is operational and while he's about half their size, it's comical watching the streaming video that I can see as he wobbles like crazy on the roof in the wind. BTW, snow is forecast late tonight.

Interesting observation: this year, with the whole thing apparently for real, the lights are actually looking much less active. Even with 90+ people listed as being active, you can still reasonably expect to see the changes you're commanding take effect. It's rather cool to watch Frosty inflate and deflate on command. :-)
Alek replies at 2005_11_28_18:50: Good observation - my experience is that most people are passive. For instance, my wife had a letter printed in today's Boulder Camera - circulation of several tens of thousands. We've been here for a decade+ and my last name is pretty unique ... so far, three people have mentioned they saw the letter ... so go figure. Glad you enjoy messing with Frosty - have fun before the masses start showing up in December. Too bad I can't rebroadcast the MPEG4 stream I can see on my house LAN, because it is frickin' hilareous watching him do his thing at 10 frames/second! ;-)

Alek, Between the flashing of your meta-refresh and the flashing lights, you're gonna give someone a siezure! Perhaps you could enhance your site to refresh the Webcam images via AJAX so the whole page doesn't refresh causing the images to blink? IT'd give a much smoother appearance to the webcam images too ... they'd seem to "morph" into the next time-lapse as the new image was replaced by the old with no blink.
Alek replies at 2005_12_02_14:04: I agree the meta-refresh is a bit annoying - write me some code that will do this. Remember that when I load an image, I don't know the filename (or when it will be available) of the next subsequent image, since it hasn't been FTP'ed over yet.

good question on what API/Language is being used! Mine are all controlled from an old 486DX4/100 running win95 and a small DOS program called "lptout". Any idea if something like that would work? (it would only need to execute "lptout 1" for ON and "lptout 0" for OFF). My current methods involve either using VNC (slow on a 486) or an mIRC client on a local server with a small script setup to execute the DOS app on a privmsg.

We had about an inch of icy snow the evening of December 2nd and it has been cold since then. In fact, Frosty and Frank would not stand up until I knocked off the accumulation. Temperature at ChristmasCam #1 hit an overnight low of 17°F - yea, I have measurements there via a wireless temperature monitor. Thanx for all the great comments (even the chocolate ones) and I have just added an overly long christmas video of "how I do it" with misc. technical information - also see the christmas FAQ.

Thank you for your work on Celiac Disease. One of my 3 sons also has Celiac Sprue and must watch his diet very carefully. It is amazing how many processed foods he cannot eat--breakfast cereal, for example. Even rice crispy types add malt, I suppose for crunchiness. Many companies have inadequate labeling. Is "modified food starch" corn based or wheat? Some of us need to know. Thank you for your work and also for the educational value that it has!
Alek replies at 2005_12_05_11:44: You are absolutely right ... and my wife Wendy has been awesome sorting all this out. Good news is that effective Jan 1st, 2006, the new food labelling guidelines go into affect. This will not only make it easier to see what might be contaminated, but also will encourage vendors to produce more goods that are allergy free by simple changes in their manufacturing process.

The odd thing I found, and did not know why the doctors did not pursuit it was that in her last months she could have bread. My entire family was upset when my aunt was given bread but the doctors said she no longer had sprue....Has there ever been cases where sprue was reversed (other than my aunt?) I think it is pretty neat that you can turn the lights on and off like that remotely. Maybe next year, instead of just being able to turn the lights on and off, maybe you could have your website allow someone to create a sequence, then run the light sequence. Something that would let you pick which zones you could turn on or off and how long until the next element in the sequence (with a max of like 5-10 seconds). Might get some really neat stuff that way :).... Merry Christmas Alek and hope you and yours have a lower electric bill over your old record as you predict you will.

My wife won a free airplane flight a while back so I got to take my boys up Saturday evening in a Cessna 172 courtesy of Specialty Flight Training out of the Erie Airport. We had a great flight with Bill Elliott who was a great pilot - lined it up perfectly for the flyby pictures, but you guys kept turning the lights off! ;-) Dirk and Kyle had a blast seeing the house from a 1,000' up. Some pictures of the boys1 & boys2 and and some so-so house1 & house2 pictures - definately a unusual point of view.

My friends Jon and Wendy visited us this weekend and in a novel/unique use of Christmas Cam #3 in Santa's workshop, they used it to to show off their newborn to friends back east. While they went out last night, I watched their two year old son ... and he didn't like it when web surfers turned the Stepping Santa OFF ... but I gave him the wireless X10 remote ... and he enjoyed turning it back on. Jon thought it was pretty funny that #225 pointed out that his kid picks his nose! ;-)

Why stop at January 1st? Traditionally, Christmas decorations (including lights) are supposed to stay up and operational through (not until, but THROUGH) January 6th, aka Epiphany, Three Kings Night, Twelfthnight, and The Twelfth Day of Christmas (yes, that's where that song comes from). Traditionally, this is the night that the Magi / Wise Men / "Three Kings" (the Bible neither calls them "kings" nor says how many of them there were) came, as some Midaeval scholar figured that it must have taken twelve days to travel from the East to Bethlehem in a small camel caravan. Anyway, following this tradition would gain you five more days to collect donations to such a worthy cause!

Alek replies at 2005_12_15:09:44: ChristmasCam #1 looks to the South, whereas ChristmasCam #2 is looking almost due north ... so that's why you see the difference. If you still doubt it, you might contact the Rocky Mountain News, since after 5 seperate visits, they concluded it is 100% real this year ... ;-)
WRT Hulk versus Jolly Green Giant - Hulk is STRONG!

I'll put the chatroom down as an idea for 2006. BTW, the X10 SuperSocket in the Panel-3 circuit (which controls the Big Tree and West Overhead Net) has started "buzzing" rather than "clicking." This would be the second one to fail - no surprise since this is a pretty intense application that is way outa spec for them. So I have plugged those lights into a non-controllable outlet for now - I'll try to replace it tomorrow when it isn't freezing cold and snowing.

have you got problems with christmas cam 3 every now and then i got the message "The server at webcam3.komar.org is taking too long to respond."?
Alek replies at 2005_12_17_16:35: Things are load-balanced behind the scenes, and the Web Server handling cam3 isn't showing any errors - neither are the other 4. It is actually cam2 that acts up the most frequently - not sure if the wireless is dropping out occasionally or the webcam is just flakey. The other problem spot is the upper-deck icicles on X10 zone 4 which is the most unreliable at receiving signals. And as just noted below, another X10 Super Socket has failed.

Yes, the 12 foot inflatable Santa is ALIVE! I picked him up at Lowe's (originally $80, marked down to $60, and then 50% off). I was going to save him for next year, but my boys went wild when they saw the box, so I tossed him out there and he is controllable with Zone 5. He takes a WHILE to inflate, so try to leave him on. The monster Santa shows up well on ChristmasCam #1 especially when I zoom in.

Alek, This is Cassady in Denver, CO. I recently purchased an X10 Firecracker system. The only way i can get it to work is with the included X10 (remote-looking) software. I would like to be able to do more with my X10 system, such as timers, etc. But i don't want to pay for the software that they are selling. Did you write your own software or use a program that you downloaded or bought?

We had a fun time at a New Years Eve Party across the street last night and celebrated midnight in several times zones ... and as Dawn suggested in #478 below, here is the first kiss of 2006.

Alek replies at 2006_01_01_10:30: I've already taken down some of the inside lights and broughts all the boxes up from the basement. I'll be outside for a good part of the next 6 hours. First up is the roof, since winds are gusting over 20 MPH and predicted to go higher.
