It is now less than 2 months before Christmas and Internet surfers have had a lot of fun with the halloween decorations. Surf to the halloween webcam on October 31st as several hundred trick-or-treaters come by. But that is all just a warmup for Christmas 2009, so I have re-enabled commenting on the Christmas Blog. Once again, there will be lots of Christmas Lights along with the zany christmas webcam which should be online by December 1st and maybe by Thanksgiving ... HO-HO-HO! ;-)

Halloween was a ton of fun as about 300 kids came by with lots of smiles. We had two feet of snow a few days earlier ... but fortunately some sunny warmer weather made it a delightful night for trick-or-treating. I had LOTS of candy and am pretty generous handing out multiple items to each kid ... until near the end when I realized I was running out (D'OH!) ... and ended up having just two bags left. The adults finished off one bottle of Port (dented another), one bottle of Bailey's, most of the Egg Nog whisky, and about half of the Tequila. Super fun time by all ... especially me as I really enjoy seeing all the smiles ... a few pics below and many more on the Halloween Blog.

Massive amounts of web traffic (as typical every year - screenshots here) with 1,373 IM's on the Haunted Office laptop ... interesting enough, just 44 more than last year. And relive the entire crazy evening in a minute via the time-lapse videos on the Halloween Movies Page.

Tonight is the last night for the halloween decorations and then it's time to get working on Christmas!

Last Christmas I was shooting dope, heavy drug use, and drinking very heavily. I didn't think that my life was ever going to be good again. I spent no time with my family or friends. In Feb. my father found a rehab. I got my life back and now this Christmas I can be with my family and be happy. This program got my life back. It can work miracles.

So while I was putting away my Halloween Decorations, my neighbors already put out their Christmas stuff - they were quite proud of "beating" me! So sure, they had their stuff set up first (although kinda weak they still had Halloween stuff out) ... but once my christmas display is all setup, then lets compare! ;-)

WRT new stuff for Christmas 2009: I actually didn't buy anything at the post-holiday sales last year after Christmas. However, there are two items that I have my eyes on and my kids are pretty excited about. While I very, very rarely pay full price, these might be worth it. So I've told Dirk & Kyle that if they are really good for the next week or so, I might pick 'em up. Both can "fly" and one is HUGE ... about as tall as the giant Santa inflatable below ... and yes, you will be able to control them via the website! ;-)

Can you pass the word. Salvation Army needs a lot of help this year for donations to the kettle campaign. In some states, Albertson's grocery is not letting them ring bells at the stores. Another grocery has cut down days to 10 days. There is no shortage on people who will need help this year and this is the time they collect money for the whole year.

I just got back from a pretty amazing Polar Bear Tour in Churchill Canada. A few pictures at that link (with many more to process/upload) and here's one of yours truly with a couple of Polar Bears. I plan to start pulling out and setting up the Christmas stuff in a couple of days. And oh yeah, my two kids were pretty good while I was gone, so per post #34, there will be some rather large additions to the Christmas Display this year ... HO-HO-HO! ;-)

I'll be periodically turning on the webcams in the next week as I do the Christmas setup. I first had to shovel snow from my front yard (several neighbors asked why the heck I was doing that! ;-) so it will melt in the sunny weather and I can start putting the Christmas stuff out. No major snow predicted through Thanksgiving, so you'll see some big changes between now and then. For those interested, check out the Christmas videos page to watch me shovel the snow.

People always ask "what's new this year" and remember that I always buy stuff for 50%-75% off at the post-holiday sales. I actually didn't buy anything after Christmas last year, but something caught my eye this year. So I actually paid full price for something (YIKES) but it was too funny to pass up given the recent "Balloon Boy" incident. And for the record, I've never been on Wife Swap ... or any TV reality show! ;-) I had alluded to two items in blog post #34, but the inflatable airplane was $80 (rather than $50) ... so that will have to wait for the post-holiday sales. Needless to say, the Santa Balloon is not going to fit in Santa's Workshop ... and making sure it is well secured (especially against wind) will be a fun challenge. And yes, Internet surfers will be able to inflate and deflate the balloon - D'OH! ;-)

TO post 104 :the balloon actually looks fantasti, however the pump has been switched off so the remaining air is being blown around by the wind! if you had looked earlier yo would of seen how good it was ::)
Alek replies at 17:52 - I just did some testing tonight and it does look pretty darn good if I do say so myself. It will self-inflate/right itself, so pretty sure I'll be able to allow Internet users to inflate/deflate it. It's pretty well secured (I'll try to take some pics tomorrow), but even in the slightest breeze, it really moves around, so probably have to disable on windy evenings.

As implied in post #85, it really did "hurt" to pay full price for a holiday decoration, especially one as expensive as this ... and it is by far the most expensive item in the display - D'OH! But sounds like my usual strategy of waiting until after Christmas for 50-75% off might not have worked here as I didn't realize how popular it would be ... but should be a lot of fun for Christmas/2009!

Speaking of dark areas, even with the balloon on the lowest part of my yard/farthest from the webcam, I've had to slew the webcam up to capture all of it ... so there's a fair amount of (usually) dark road to the left and right of it.

I was out early this morning putting up (even) more lights in the front yard, and heard a "whoosh, whoosh" and noticed some hot-air balloons drifting across the sky - look closely and there's a third in the distance. Not that uncommon and you often hear the propane burners before you see the balloons. So I inflated my balloon and took a quick picture - too bad they didn't come any closer and almost land in my backyard as happened several months ago.

Have you thought about using nginx to stream those static images for the front page? One low spec nginx powered webserver could easilly fill a gigabit nic with static files... Great Christmas display but terrible website design. What is holding up webcam1 going online?
Alek replies at 22:54 - Welllll ... the concept of allowing people from around the world to control your Christmas lights is a bit over-the-top ... and therefore so is the website design. One major issue I've been working on is the lighted train, which is a key part above the garage. Recall last year there was some major winds a couple of days after Christmas - about 12 hours of sustained 30MPH with gusts to 70 MPH - yikes. So as seen in the picture below, the train took some major damage - yes, it is hanging upside down on the safety rope ... and NONE of the lights worked. Turns out some of the internal wiring was stretched and therefore continuity was broken in several places. After a number of splices, I now have about 75% of it working ... and most of the rest of the front of the house is ready to go ... including the "Santa Plane" (hanging from the upper roof) which is repaired and in place, ready to fly! ;-)

While X-10 isn't the most reliable powerline protocol, it's been a bit sluggish. So I traced all the circuits to the main breaker box and switched three of them over so everything is on the same Phase. Without boring everyone with technical details, this should improve performance and reliability ... looked pretty solid when I just tested it ... but the real test is when everyone in the world is hammerin' on the X-10 controls. So give it a good workout/streess test this evening! ;-)

When our laptop and desktop both died in the same week, with no cash for new ones, my kids were so upset at the thought of missing those "really cool lights". I happened to wake up early this morning - it was pretty darn quiet and peaceful in the pre-dawn light but a bit nippy with temperatures in the single digits. First picture (mouseover image for wide-angle as-shot) is a self-portrait 53 minutes before sunrise - 30 second exposure at ISO 800 and F/6.3 - note the shadows from the full moon that is to the right. There's also some shadows from the off-camera flash (on the left) - check out Frosty's hat on the garage. Second picture is 16 minutes before sunrise - 1/4s at ISO 200 and F/5.6 - a lot more light and enough that the turned on Christmas display wouldn't blow out the picture.

One of the nifty events our neighborhood does is a holiday shin-dig that includes a visit by Santa and horse-drawn sleigh rides. I setup my canon 7D on a tripod and was able to capture this picture ... had to boost the shadows a bit so you can see us, but that's me in the front left seat. Wind is the biggest weather issue for Christmas Lights and can seriously damage a display. Fortunately, the gusts last night probably never got above 30MPH, and I don't see any major damage from last night ... except the Hulk's Santa hat blew off. Here's the Santa Plane on the top roof this morning which has a fair amount of surface area, but looks solid thanks to some pavers and a safety rope.

I also took a picture of the SnowGlobe this morning. All of the inflatables "carve" out a spot in the snow ... and it's a little easier to see with all of the foliage on the ground from the wind.

Alek replies at 12:48 - You are probably referring to the neighbors across the street who have had a major construction project going on. The same ones that allow me to locate the webcam at their house. So I don't think they are too mad about the Christmas display! ;-)

Hello alek do you let the kids come up and look at them in the garden, gees! Mine were vandalised and we dont if we allowed people in they would be well gone! Quick way of taking down after xmas i suppose. Btw you should do behind the scenes and special tours of the lights and raise more money for your charity. After several days of unseasonable warm sunny weather, a cold front is starting to arrive and there should be snow tonight with temperatures in the single digits tomorrow. Alek replies at 21:00 - Webcam3 will probably stay in Santa's Workshop tomorrow, but since Christmas Eve has a ton of visitors, it will probably go on early and stay open until Midnight ... as people really enjoy it and type in a lot of very nice Christmas messages - one example of many below.

While most people just shovel snow from their driveways, I also have to sweep the snow from the christmas lights so they are more easily seen ... plus make sure the inflatables can "bust out" of the snow. Some time-lapse animation of that action now on the Christmas videos page.

I ordered dancing balarina music jewelry box and even got to customize the song using a song my daughter wrote as she is a musician and singer. Alek replies at 10:32 - That is correct as the last night is Friday, January 1st ... although the Blog will be open for comments for another week or so. BTW, for those that missed Christmas Eve (always the busiest night), here's a screenshot and check out the christmas videos of the craziness. And gotta love the picture below - bet my neighbor is glad that UPS showed up for a last minute delivery on Christmas Eve!

And here's another late night shot that is similar to the one in post #348. It was taken at 11:45 two days later (still no moon, so it really is darn dark) and is a 52 second exposure at F/3.5 and ISO800.

Picked up a few things at the post-Christmas sales for 50-75% off that you'll see for Christmas 2010 ... HO-HO-HO! That is a Skiing, Helicopter, and Airplane Santa ... and yes, they all "move" as you may be able to tell from the motion blur in the image - check out a movie of 'em in action!. Also got some giant LED light bulbs ... but Kyle and his friend Leo seem to enjoy using the lighted candy canes (62 cents at Wal-Mart!) as Light-Sabers the most ... ;-)

I spent a good part of the day taking down the Christmas Lights & Decorations - once you get going, it's just easier to finish it, and I'm about 90% done. It was a bit dicey at times, especially with the snow on the roof, but no injuries. For those that missed the action on the webcams, check out the Christmas Videos page. Still a bit of work to store it all away in the basement crawlspace, but that pretty much wraps up the webcam coverage for Christmas/2009. I'll leave the blog open for a few more days for any last comments.
