WOW ... before I know it, it's the day before Halloween. Needless to say, there will be lots of Trick-or-Treaters checking out the crazy halloween decorations tomorrow ... which is also seeable online on the halloween webcam. But this is just the warmup for Christmas so I have re-enabled commenting on the Christmas Blog ... and I hope to have the zany christmas webcam online by December 1st and maybe sometime after Thanksgiving. As one person wrote to me "Can I have you as my dad? It just keeps getting more awesome each year Alek!" ... HO-HO-HO! ;-)

55 days until Christmas! Alek have you ever tried using other home automation types such as Z-wave?
Alek replies at 13:02 - X10 certainly is an old technology with some issues ... but I have all the gear bought/paid-for/installed ... and it generally works ... especially since I got this totally bad-a** XTB-IIR/III X10 signal booster from JV Digital Engineering. Before, it was always a challenge to the find the "right" combination of TM751 transceivers (on the "right" circuits!) to hopefully maximize reliability ... and sometimes things would just flake out with circuits/zones "stuck" - who turned on the Microwave Oven?!? ;-) The XTB-IIR/III (pictured below) just ROCKS - if you are an X10 user, I strongly encourage you check out JV Digital Engineering - Jeff Volp makes some great products (the craftsmanship is exquisite) and is a genuine pleasure to work with.

We had our first significant snow of the season as temperatures plunged and a couple of inches of fluffy white stuff showed up. While it was pretty chilly, cool to see the new season ... and another sign that Christmas is coming. In the webcam image below, I'm shoveling the driveway as the wife drives in. Notice how "bare" the front lawn looks - that is going to change dramatically in the next week! ;-)

In 2008, the Controllable Christmas Lights for Celiac Disease won the KFC Nationwide Holiday Lights contest and I had them donate the $1,000 first prize to charity. In 2013, Christmas Lights Etc is having a $5,000 Photo Contest so I entered the picture below. That's my son Kyle and I by the 15' Santa Balloon. It would be cool to add to the over $75,000 raised for charity so far. In preparation for setting up the christmas stuff this upcoming week, I pulled it all out of the basement crawlspace. My favorite helper each year is Jeffrey (who lives a few doors down) and here he is in front of the various "piles" - yes, the wife isn't too keen if her exercise equipment is blocked. Although back in 2005, someone donated a $100 for a picture of my cluttered basement. Unfortunately, Jeffrey will be gone next week ... but my Mom will be visiting and she's a big help too - heck, I might even get my teenage boys to help some even though they aren't as in to Christmas as they used to be! ;-)

While you can't see anything yet, progress was made today and just about everything was moved out of the basement to the staging areas on the front lawn and the inflatables on the back porch. I will probably turn on the webcams tomorrow when we start to deploy! ;-)

I've turned on webcam2 so you'll see us (my Mom, perhaps my kids (!) and me) working in the front lawn later today. Also, webcam1 (an AXIS215 enclosed in a 6" sewer pipe!) has been installed at the neighbors house across the street.

Once again, my neighbor across the street has finished their Christmas display before me (albeit it's a bit less grandiose/gaudy)... and I gotta love their inflatable Santa in a Hammock between two palm trees. Normally I take pictures at dusk so you can see them lit up ... but this one just has to be taken during the daylight! ;-)

Alek, on average, how long does it take for you to put your display up (from beginning to end)? Also, how much help do you usually have when you put your display up? My task has officially become a 2 day thing! LOL
Alek replies at 13:29 - As mentioned, my Mom was in town and helped with the setup this year - she's awesome. The whole setup from storage to operational deployment takes a couple of weeks, but that's only working on it a couple of hours a day ... although there's a big push at the end, especially if the weather is nice.

As mentioned on the chat board last night, the winds came up ... and they are increasing today with predictions of up to 75MPH ... which is what clobbered things in 2008 - Wind is the Greatest Enemy of Holiday Displays! So while the lights, webcams (watch cam #1 bounce around), and X10 controls will be online, the 12' Santa and 15' Balloon (and maybe some other inflatables) won't be plugged in this evening. Snow is predicted later in the week.

The Christmas Train is BAACCCKKKK!!!!
This was a fixture for several years until 70+ MPH winds clobbered it in 2008 as seen in the first image below. But after some "Open-Train-Surgery" along with controller transplant, plus replacing dozens of burnt out bulbs, it is back in operation and chugging along ... HO-HO-HO! ;-)

Here's a picture of the horse drawn sleigh that made laps around the neighborhood for a few hours tonight. It's a bit of work doing since I'm holding a secondary flash but also have to remotely trigger the camera ... and there were some technical problems so I ended up speaker cell phoning to my son to fire the camera. I kinda screwed up this picture - should have had them come further forward ... plus the balloon had fallen over ... the 2012 shot (2nd image) was much better ... and also shows the differences in the display. I'll try to get a better horse drawn sleigh picture next year!

Good News: Despite the chilly weather, I replaced the Super Socket on zone #4 that wasn't working - post #131 was prophetic because it was the same problem as outlined there. The 15 minute job took twice as long ... because I had to keep going inside to warm up my fingers after handing the 8°F metal! ;-)

Here's a couple of long-exposure pictures from last night presented so you can flip/scroll across to compare. The short duration 5 second exposure is at ISO 800, so a bit noiser (not as noticeable in the low-res web image), but the stars/inflatables are more "frozen" ... whereas the 364 second ISO100 exposure is much cleaner, but there as a slight breeze moving the inflatables plus you see star trails. Use the slider to move across or click on the image/use the links at the bottom to compare.

While people around the world (149 countries last year) enjoy seeing the lights ON, environmentalists will be happy to know that they can turn the lights OFF with a click of the mouse. Better yet, this is the 9th year I'm using Wind Power and even though that is "clean" energy, I do a (double) Carbon Offset contribution for the half Ton of CO2 generated by the about one MegaWatt-Hour of power consumed - that's about the same as a single cross-country airline trip. Finally, by providing online viewing via webcam, you don't need to burn fossil fuels by driving around to see Christmas lights ... Al Gore would be proud! ;-)

Here's what Santa's Workshop looks like as taken by the Vivotek 8161 webcam. It does a pretty decent job (much better than the D-Link DCS-6620G it replaced) ... but still no match for a Canon 7D DSLR. You can mouseover the images to see a comparison - the perspective is slightly offset since they weren't shot from exactly the same location.

Hi Alek, you say you use wind to power the lights. Are we talking about a wind turbine in your garden? Do you have any photos of it? I've not seen any messages from Dave UK this year, are you out there?
Alek replies at 01:14 - There are no windmills/turbines in my garden. Xcel Energy, our local energy provider, has a program where you pay a little extra and your power come from wind generated sources. And yea, Dave UK has been a regular poster in the past, but sad we have not heard from him in a while.

As mentioned last night, some bad news about the 15' Home Depot Santa Balloon that has been a fixture of the Christmas Display since 2009. As seen in the pictures below, the main supporting structure has several broken "rivets", along with a substantial tear at the seam which I can't patch with packing tape. Home Depot was nice enough to send me a replacement strut last year when that broke, but this is much more major and after 4 years, they may tell me it is just normal wear & tear. After taking the picture, I "told" the Homer Santa the bad news - he's pretty sad as seen in the 3rd image below! ;-)

So I wrote an Email to Home Depot and Gemmy, who made this inflatable (but doesn't anymore). Both responded promptly and Gemmy dug around in their spare parts bin and found the last set ... and are sending it to me - may even make it before Christmas! I've always had a soft spot for the picture below from 2004. Those are my kids (a LOT younger) helping my Mom shovel the driveway. I used to decorate the trees on the left and right - they are wayyyy too big now. Note also there are no inflatables ... I bought my first one (the 8' Frosty ... who still is there but struggles a bit) and now have a "few" more ... as seen in the 2nd picture from 2012! ;-)

Here's what the website looks like each year (there are small changes) and most numbers of surfers was 4,881 in 2010. Christmas Eve has always been the busiest time, but Slashdot can generate a HUGE amount of traffic ... and I actually did a video interview with those guys today that they'll probably post soon.

It's Christmas Eve, so the X10 controls are fired up early at 4:00. The lights are a bit hard to see, but the sun is setting. One problem is that it was VERY windy this morning ... so I had to unplug/bungee the Santa Balloon. But the wind is dying down and I hope to inflate (and deflate!) it in soon. As mentioned in post #196, the folks at Gemmy (and Home Depot) just ROCK - was soooo awesome they were able to get me a replacement balloon envelope. Asute observers will notice the new one is Red/Green ... versus Red/White ... more festive Christmas Colors!

For the first time EVER, my wife did the post-holiday Christmas Decorations shopping for me - what a great gal! ;-)
She actually was doing a Costco run and had to swing into "Targe'" for a couple of things ... and my older son who was with her noticed some these nifty Blue, Green, and Red presents at 70% off - WOOT! They also got a little USB LED Christmas Tree that is pretty cool - goes on top of the Lava Lamp in Santa's Workshop! ;-)

Here's the time-lapse video of the front yard takedown. My son Dirk was a great help ... and with my prep work earlier in the day, it took us 32 minutes to clear out the front lawn ... with the exception of the candy canes which are frozen in the ground. And yes, I plan to do a time-lapse of Santa's Workshop ... and tune in tomorrow morning for a live feed via webcam #1 of everything on the house being removed! ;-)

That's a nice note Steve ... glad I left the Blog open later than I normally do. I've put most of the stuff away in the basement as seen in the picture below and it is time to close down the blog for this year. Web Surfers from 121 countries visited in 2013 as seen on the Christmas Maps and the total raised for Celiac Disease is now over $80,000 - THANKS!
